The U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi would like to inform American citizens that an armed carjacking occurred February 7 on the main east-west highway near Igoeti. The vehicle was taken to South Ossetia and a telephone belonging to one of the victims was used to make a ransom demand. While this believed to be an isolated criminal incident, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi is advising Embassy personnel and all American citizens in the region to exercise extreme caution if traveling between Tbilisi and Gori on the M-27 highway. All American citizens in Georgia should register with the U.S. Embassy and review the current Travel Warning that is in effect for for Georgia.
