Artisterium 2012
U. S. Embassy in Tbilisi is sponsoring the American part of the major annual international contemporary art event, 2012 ARTISTERIUM, held in Tbilisi from October 5 through October 13. Lydia Matthews, a U.S. Professor of Visual Studies and Director of the Curatorial Design Research Lab at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City, is the invited curator of a project called “ Streetwise.” The project features U.S. artists whose socially engaged projects earned critical attention by working in the public sphere: from large-scale muralists with their roots in graffiti art to hip hop performance artists, eco-oriented textile designers working in mobile labs within farmer’s markets, and researchers who facilitate virtual and actual cross-cultural think tanks aimed at solving problems of people’s daily lives. “Streetwise” intends to highlight diverse projects and working methods from the U.S., and especially to create a platform to inspire broader dialogues about new forms of public art practice taking place both in the U.S. and in Georgia. U.S. artists and educators will actively engage with Georgian artists, designers and cultural activists, and will offer talks, workshops, educational lectures and opportunities for collaborating exchange in the making of site-specific works within Tbilisi.
