United States Peace Corps of Georgia will induct 43 new volunteers into service.

Tbilisi – At 11:00 am Friday, August 24, 2007, the United States Peace Corps of Georgia will induct 43 new volunteers into service. The event which is a long-held tradition in Peace Corps will be held at the Marjanishvili State Academic Theater and celebrates the Peace Corps American trainees taking an oath of service and becoming official Peace Corps Volunteers. The U.S. Charge d’Affairs the Honorable Mark. X. Perry, Peace Corps will deliver the oath to the Trainees and the Minister of Education and Science Mr. Alexander Lomaia will be the keynote speaker for the event. The ceremony will also feature professional performances of Georgian dances and songs.

The volunteers were trained in Georgian language and in technical areas while living in small groups in the towns and villages of the Shida Kartli region. Following the ceremony they will move to cities and villages in the regions of Adjara, Guria, Imereti, Samegrelo, Kakheti, Kvemo and Shida Kartli and Samtskhe Javakheti to complete two years of volunteer service. Depending on their respective areas of assignment, the Volunteers will teach English at secondary schools, work in various NGOs or business support organizations in the regions and districts. The Volunteers will work side-by-side with Georgian partners and will also collaborate with community groups and individuals to develop sustainable community activities to enhance the quality of life for Georgians in the communities where they serve.

We look forward to their continuing the excellent work in the Education and NGO sectors of current and past Volunteers and their counterparts. We are also pleased to welcome the first group of business advising/development Volunteers who will work in the area of small and micro- business development and social entrepreneurship, an important new area of focus for Peace Corps Georgia” said Kathleen Sifer, Peace Corps Georgia Country Director.

Georgia has a 7-year history with the United States Peace Corps, which enjoys the support of the government and the Georgian people. Over 250 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in Georgia.

Since 1961, more than 190,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of 139 countries where Volunteers have served. Georgia is one of 73 countries to currently partner with Peace Corps.
