U.S. Ambassador John Tefft And General Director Of The Georgian National Museum David Lordkipanidze Open An Exhibit “Georgian Embroidery From The 12th-19th Centuries”
Tbilisi – On June 22 at 18:00, U.S. Ambassador John Tefft and General Director of the Georgian National Museum David Lordkipanidze will open the exhibit “Georgian Embroidery from the 12th-19th Centuries” at the Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts (1, Gudiashvili Street, Tbilisi).
The exhibition will feature 100 works of artistic embroidery from the 12th-19th centuries which have been restored in part through funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. The opening of the exhibition marks the first time this unique collection is being presented by the museum.
The U.S. Department of State’s Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation grant was allocated to the Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in October 2006. The grant provides funds for the preservation and conservation of the embroidery and textile collection of the Museum, the creation of a modern storage space, the purchase of materials for restoration of the collection, the purchase of equipment to digitize the collection, and the establishment of a database.
The Georgian National Museum has a unique collection of embroidery, which was created in the second half of 19th century; today there are over 5,000 pieces stored in this collection. The works of embroidery in this collection were created by noble Georgian women and artists during the mentioned periods , and depicts the cultural and social atmosphere of the particular period in which they were created.
The Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation is a program of the U.S. Department of State which was established in 2001 to help different countries of the world preserve their cultural heritage. U.S. Ambassadors from selected eligible countries have an opportunity to present projects for this highly competitive program.
