Peace Corps Volunteers To Arrive In Georgia

Peace Corps Georgia announces the arrival of the seventh group of Peace Corps Volunteers. The US Peace Corps operates in Georgia at the request of the Georgian government and provides qualified men and women who contribute to social and economic development while promoting a better understanding between Americans and Georgians.

The seventh group will consist of 32 English teachers, 7 NGO advisers and 8 business consultants. They arrived in Tbilisi early in the morning on June 16.

The Volunteers will attend a ten-week long Pre-Service Training in Gori prior to commencing their service. The training program will consist of major components such as Georgian language, Cross Culture, and Technical training.

On August 24, those trainees who meet all requirements of the training program will swear-in as Peace Corps Volunteers in Georgia and begin their service.

Depending on the respective areas of assignment, the Volunteers will teach English at secondary schools, work in various NGOs or business support organizations in the regions and districts. The Volunteers will work side-by-side with Georgian partners and will also collaborate with community groups and individuals to develop sustainable community activities to enhance the quality of life for Georgians in the communities where they serve.

“We are exited to welcome this new group of Peace Corps Volunteers to Georgia. We look forward to their continuing the excellent work in the Education and NGO sectors of current and past Volunteers and their counterparts. We are also pleased to be welcoming the first group of business advising/development Volunteers who will work in the area of business and social entrepreneurship development, an important new area of focus for Peace Corps Georgia” said Kathleen Sifer, Peace Corps Georgia Country Director.

Since 1961, more than 187,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have helped promote a better understanding between Americans and the people of 139 countries where Volunteers have served. Georgia is one of 73 countries to currently partner with Peace Corps.
