U.S. Embassy Expresses Sadness Over Aragvi River Tragedy
Millennium Challenge Corporation and the U.S. Embassy were saddened to hear of the death on Saturday of Chamal Mamebov, an employee of Khazardenizneftegaztikinti Trust, a contractor performing MCC-funded repairs on the North South Gas Pipeline.
Mr. Mamebov, together with two co workers, Mr. Emin Aliev and Mr. Vilaiat Balajanov, leaped into the Aragvi River on Saturday in an effort to save two Georgian school children and their teacher who had been swept into the river upstream. Mr. Mamebov drowned in his heroic attempt. Both the school children and their teacher also died.
“We join with all of Georgia in commending the heroic acts of all three of these workers”, said U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John F. Tefft. “We also share deep sorrow at all four deaths.”
