Presentation Of Tbilisi Panoramic Cultural-Historic Route

Tbilisi – On May 27, at 11 a.m. the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office, and the Georgian company Ltd. Geographic will present TBILISI PANORAMIC CULTURAL-HISTORIC ROUTE.  The presentation will include a guided walk of the 1.5 km route of old Tbilisi.  The walk will start at 11 a.m. at the Main Entrance of the Tbilisi Botanical Garden, 1 Botanical Street.

The TBILISI PANORAMIC CULTURAL-HISTORIC ROUTE was created as a result of a project funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Ambassador’s Cultural Heritage Preservation Fund.  The project is co-funded by the Tbilisi Municipality and Ltd. Geographic.  The project is implemented by Ltd. Geographic.

The project implementation started in 2006 and will be completed in May 2007.  As a result of the project, a cultural tourist route was created on the 1.5 km area of old Tbilisi – the Kala district.  The route offers English-Georgian signs with information on the 19 important monuments located on the route, new lighting system for touring the route during the evening, information tables with old photographs and maps of Tbilisi, and binoculars for the panoramic views.  The project will also result in creation of information brochures, website, guides, and maps of the old Tbilisi.

The TBILISI PANORAMIC CULTURAL-HISTORIC ROUTE will become one of the landmarks of Tbilisi interesting not only to the tourists and visitors but also to the citizens of Georgia.  The historical part of the city of Tbilisi is of great historical-architectural and artistic importance and is nominated for the world heritage roster as an urban heritage monument.

Amongst the monuments located on the TBILISI PANORAMIC CULTURAL-HISTORIC ROUTE, are Moghnisi Gregorian Church (Armenian); Bethlehem cross-domed brick-built Orthodox Church; Upper Bethlehem Churches of the 18th century; Ateshga or Heathenish Temple; Kldis Ubani Church of the 17th century; Mosque Juma, a brick-built building with a minaret on its roof, of the 19th century; Narikala caslte of the 17th century; and the Tbilisi sulfur baths.  These monuments are linked with street-stairs network covered with stones laid between the Asian, Tbilisi and eclectic residential houses of the 19th century.
