U.S. Destroyer Makes Port Call in Batumi
The destroyer USS The SULLIVANS will make a port call in Batumi from 30 April until 2 May. To coincide with the visit, Rear Admiral Phillip Greene from Naval Forces Europe is visiting to stress the importance of improved interoperability with NATO and capability development. This is the first U.S. admiral to visit Georgia and is meant to show the U.S. Navy’s increased interest in NATO-Georgian cooperation in maritime security. There will be combined training conducted with the Georgian Navy in port and at sea during the visit. U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, John F. Tefft, and invited Georgian officials are expected to attend ceremonies related to the port call in Batumi on Monday, April 30.
THE SULLIVANS (DDG-68) is named to honor five brothers from Waterloo, Iowa who served together on the USS JUNEAU during World War II. The Sullivan brothers: George, 28; Francis, 27; Joseph, 24; Madison, 23; and Albert, 20; lost their lives during the Battle of Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. They were adamant about serving together in spite of the Navy wartime policy to separate family members.
