Senator Richard Lugar Visits Georgia
The U.S. Congressional Delegation led by Senator Richard Lugar, Chairman of Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, will visit Georgia August 22-24.
Senator Lugar’s visit to Georgia is part of a five country tour including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Albania. The main aim of the visit is to discuss energy problems. The delegation will tour the route of Kazakh oil to the world market via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea.
In Georgia, Senator Lugar also plans to visit weapons facilities and biological facilities operated under the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program. The Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, also known as the Nunn-Lugar Act, provides U.S. funding and expertise to help Georgia and other nations safeguard and dismantle nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, related materials, and delivery systems.
While in Georgia, Senator Lugar will meet with President Mikheil Saakashvili, Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli, members of the Georgian Parliament and other government officials.
