US Peace Corps Volunteers to conduct training sessions for English teachers in Kobuleti, Rustavi and Borjomi
For the last three years, United States Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) have conducted training for English teachers throughout the regions of Georgia. This training is funded by the United States Embassy. This year, trainings will be conducted in accordance with the following schedule:
Kobuleti March 25 th and 26 th
Rustavi April 15 th and 16 th (Dates are still tentative)
Borjomi April 29 th and 30 th
Teachers must apply in advance for the training sessions through a Peace Corps Volunteer in their city. Teachers who successfully complete the two-day training receive a certificate indicating completion of the program.
These training sessions will train English teachers to use new methods of language instruction. The primary method used is called the “communicative method”, which focuses on teaching the language by encouraging and requiring students to actually use the language as much as possible in communicative activities. This method is different from many current methods that require students to memorize passages or vocabulary lists. This technique has been proven to be more effective in producing students who can use the language for every day communication tasks.
In addition, other sessions will be offered: Teaching in Multi-Level Classrooms, Teaching English without Using Translation, Classroom Management, Songs for the Classroom, Speaking and Listening Skills, Essay Writing, Using Authentic Texts, Testing and Test Taking Skills, Teaching English through Geography, Teaching Poetry, Americanisms and Slang, Supplementary Materials for the Classroom, Review Activities, Critical Thinking, Teaching Study Skills, Adapting Current Text Books for the Classroom, Teaching a Multiple Intelligence Lesson, and Teaching English by Using History.
