U.S. Ambassador John Bass and Supreme Court Chairman Konstantine Kublashvilipresented awards to the winning students of Georgia's first National CriminalTrial Advocacy Competition on December 2 at the Supreme Court of Georgia. Thecompetition was sponsored by the U.S. Government as part of its $19 million JudicialIndependence and Legal Empowerment Project (JILEP). The project, administered by theUSAID, aims at increasing the independence of the judiciary, strengthening the capacityof professional law associations, improving the quality of legal education and developingcommercial law.Law students from the following eight universities took part in the competition: Georgian-American University, International Black Sea University, Sokhumi StateUniversity, Ilia State University, University of Georgia, Free University of Tbilisi,Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University and Kutaisi Akaki Tsereteli State University.
