.S. Ambassador Kenneth S. Yalowitz to Open Internet Access Site in Poti
December 1, 2000

Tbilisi—On December 5th, U.S. Ambassador Kenneth S. Yalowitz will open a U.S. government funded Internet access site in Poti. This site is one of six U.S. government funded Internet centers to be officially opened on December 4th and 5th in Batumi, Poti and Kutaisi. The centers will provide free-of–charge Internet access as well as training courses in basic computer literacy, Internet use, and web design conducted by the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP.)

IATP is a program of the Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) in the U.S. Department of State and administered by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX). IATP is an innovative program that utilizes the Internet to encourage information sharing, network building, and collaboration among alumni of U.S. government sponsored exchange programs as well as other professional groups and academic audiences. The program in Georgia began in 1997, and since that time over 3500 Georgians have had a chance to participate in IATP training courses. Currently, IATP operates one public site in Tbilisi and a web studio in its office.
