Tbilisi Youth Palace Opens American Corner
November 9, 2006

On November 9, 2006, U.S. Ambassador John Tefft and Deputy Minister of Education Bela Tsipuria will open a new American Corner at the Tbilisi Youth Palace. U.S. Embassy representatives, Georgian government officials and members of academe will attend the ceremony.

The American Corner program in Georgia started in 2003 with the opening of the American Corner in Telavi Public Library. Since then four corners have been opened in Batumi, Khashuri, Gori, Tbilisi (at Tbilisi State University). The American Corner Youth Palace is will be the sixth corner in Georgia. A seventh American Corner in Zugdidi is scheduled to open this year.

American Corners are American-styled libraries designed to increase understanding between Georgia and the United States by providing information about U.S. The American Corner program is one of the key outreach programs of the U.S. State Department. The American Corner program is run by the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section in cooperation with local host institutions.

American Corners provide their users with information about the U.S. in order to strengthen cultural and educational ties between the two countries. The corners offer their users a collection of publications including reference materials, fiction, test preparation manuals, English language test books and books on American culture and history. American Corners also offer a range of multimedia, including access to Internet and electronic resources. Each American Corner is managed by a Georgian librarian who develops cultural programs and classes in coordination with the U.S. Embassy.
