U.S. Ambassador Marks Five Years of Eurasia Grantmaking in Georgia

Tbilisi -The U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Kenneth Yalowitz, will speak at a ceremony on Friday, October 27 to mark five years of the Eurasia Foundation's grantmaking activities in Georgia. Also participating in the ceremony will be Parliament Speaker Zurab Zhvania, Eurasia President Charles William Maynes, and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Caucasus Mission Director Michael Farbman.
With primary funding from the United States. Congress, the Eurasia Foundation has awarded 185 grants for a total of $3.6 million in Georgia to NGOs, professional associations, and institutions to foster the development of private enterprise, public administration, and civil society. The Eurasia Foundation was one of the first U.S. organizations to take part in development activities in Georgia, launching its operations in 1995.
Notable Eurasia grant recipients since 1995 include: the Caucasus Institute for Peace, Democracy and Development, the Georgian Young Lawyers Association, the Federation of Professional Accountants and Auditors, and the Young Scientists Club of Ozurgeti.
As a part of the United States' government assistance efforts in Georgia, Eurasia programs are expanding activities to the regions of Georgia, giving opportunities to those outside the capital to play a more active role in the transition to democracy and a market economy. Recent grants by Eurasia which have had significant impact in the regions include the Rule of Law program, the Media Awards program, and the Association for the Protection of Landowners Rights. Eurasia. s South Caucasus Cooperation Program, launched in 1997, encourages professional associations and NGOs from Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia to work collaboratively on developing cross-border activities.
