2006 Press Release

Millennium Challenge Corporation’s 2007 Indicators Show Improvement for Georgia
October 16, 2006

Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) announced the 2007 eligibility indicators for Georgia. The sixteen indicators, which measure a country’s performance against its peers in areas of “Ruling Justly”, “Investing in People” and “Economic Freedom”, are used by MCC to determine whether countries are eligible for funding from the Millennium Challenge Account.

The indicators generally show improvement on the part of Georgia and, importantly, show that Georgia now satisfies the indicator regarding “Control of Corruption”. In the 2006 indicators, Georgia scored below the median for its peer group for control of corruption. In the 2007 indicators, Georgia now scores well above its peers – in the 78th percentile.

“The indicators reflect what we expected,” notes Colin Buckley, MCC’s Resident Country Director in Georgia. “Georgia has been working to improve in all the areas measured by the indicators but especially in the area of controlling corruption. Georgia’s improvement on the indicator reflects the government’s anti-corruption reforms. We look forward to further improvements in the indicators throughout the five-year life of the Compact.”
