2006 Press Releases

U.S. Embassy Statement on Georgia's Local Elections

We have read the initial report of the OSCE’s ODIHR which says that municipal elections in Georgia were conducted with general respect for fundamental freedoms and the authorities conducted the process in a professional and inclusive manner. This corresponds to the experience American observers had in monitoring the election in 137 polling stations across the country.

We also note that the OSCE report has highlighted a number of areas where improvements should be made in the pre-election and election day processes. We will encourage the Government of Georgia to study these suggestions carefully with a view to make further improvements in the electoral process.
