U.S. Government Supports Expansion of Enterprise Growth in Kakheti
September 18, 2000
Tbilisi--The U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Kenneth Yalowitz, will officially open the Georgia Enterprise Support Program (GESP) Kakheti branch office in Telavi on September 20, 2000. Sibley International administers the GESP, with funding from the U.S. Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Also opening the Kakheti branch office will be Bidzina Songhulashvili, Regional Governor of Kakheti, and P.E. Balakrishnan, Acting Director of the USAID Caucasus Mission.
The Sibley office opening is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to assist the growth of economic opportunities for Kakheti and other regions of Georgia. GESP is a three-year, $10 million USAID program assisting Georgian enterprises by promoting the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises, business associations, credit unions and professional business service firms. As part of U.S. Government’s expanded activities in the regions of Georgia, the new Kakheti branch office will enable GESP to respond to the needs of Kakheti-based micro, small and medium enterprises.
Micro, small and medium enterprise growth and development represent a key ingredient in Georgia’s economic transformation to a market economy. These types of enterprises are fast growing and provide job opportunities and incomes. Consequently, they play a critical role in Georgia’s overall economic growth.
