U.S. Government Supports Local Governance Awards

Tbilisi – On Thrursday, September 14, USAID/Caucasus Deputy Mission Director P.E. Balakrishnan and Eurasia Country Director Alexander Lomaia will announce the winners of the Eurasia Foundation's Local Government Competition at a ceremony to be held at the Tori hotel. The Eurasia Foundation Local Government Competition is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the development assistance agency of the U.S. Government.
The Eurasia Local Government grants support development of an effective and transparent system of local government and promote citizen participation in decision-making processes. Projects include such activities as training local officials; establishing mechanisms for transfer of best policies and replication of success stories in the local governance sector; introducing measures to increase constituency input and public access to information.
An evaluation panel comprised of national and foreign experts conducted a rigorous two-phase review process for the 65 proposals the Eurasia Foundation received. The awards, totaling more than $120,000, target activities in the regions outside of Tbilisi.
The Eurasia Foundation award ceremony will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14th at the Tori Hotel, the first floor Conference Room. Journalists are welcome to attend. Please call 92-25-47 for additional information.
