U.S. Government Officials Initiate Sachkhere School Reconstruction
August 14, 2000

Tbilisi— On August 15, U.S. Security Assistance Officer Captain Daniel Green, USAID Caucasus Mission Director, Michael Farbman, Governor of Imereti, Teimuraz Shashiashvili, and Mayor of Sachkhere, Tsezari Lashki will be taking part in a ground-breaking ceremony for the reconstruction of School #2 in Sachkhere, Imereti Region. Funding for this project is from the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the development assistance agency of the U.S. government.

The Sachkhere School Project is a joint effort, with support from the U.S. Department of Defense, USAID and the Sachkhere community, to reconstruct Secondary School #2, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1991. The structure prior to the earthquake was a three-story building which accommodated more than 800 students. Currently, 430 students utilize wagons as school classrooms, and there is a vital need for reconstruction of a new school.

Collaborating with U.S. funders, the education and district authorities and community are contributing unskilled labor and providing construction materials such as sand and gravel to rebuild the school. U.S. funding includes $100,000 from the Department of Defense and $50,000 from USAID, through Save the Children.

The ground-breaking ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Secondary School #2 in Sachkhere, Imereti region.
