USAID Mission Director Visits Georgia Assistance Initiative Sites in Imereti
August 14, 2000

Tbilisi— On August 14, Michael Farbman, Caucasus Mission Director of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and Kent Larson, USAID Chief of Humanitarian Response, will visit several Georgia Assistance Initiative (GAI) project sites in Imereti.

Visit to Studio and Special viewing of GAI/IMC Health Education IEC television Spots (Topics being discussed are issues such as Women’s Health, Family Planning, and Breast Feeding, prevention of STD’s and HIV/ AIDS, control of diarrhoeal diseases and early detection of acute respiratory infection.)

The U.S. government supports the $8 million Georgia Assistance Initiative (GAI), funded through USAID and managed by Save the Children Federation. The GAI is implemented in Guria, Samegrelo and Imereti, and assists communities to address priority needs in shelter, basic infrastructure rehabilitation, income generation, and health. At the same time, the GAI also assists government agencies, international organizations and local non-governmental entities in coordinating and monitoring humanitarian assistance and development efforts, while assisting in developing the Government’s capacity to respond to future crises. The GAI implementing partners are CARE, IMC, ADRA, and UMCOR.
