U.S. Government Supports Expansion of Youth House in Sokhumi

Tbilisi— USAID Caucasus Mission Director Michael Farbman, UMCOR Youth House Director Thomas Dwyer, and Sergey Shamba will take part in the opening ceremony of the newly expanded Youth House in Sokhumi on Friday, August 11.

The U.S. government is pleased to announce the expansion of the Youth House that will provide young people affected by conflict the opportunity for personal growth and social development. Funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the development assistance agency of the U.S. government, Youth Houses are operating in Tbilisi, Zugdidi and Sokhumi and are administered by UMCOR, a U.S. private voluntary organization.

More than 5000 young people from Sokhumi, Zugdidi, and Tbilisi have taken part in Youth House activities, including lessons in foreign languages, computers, health care, drama, journalism, music, recreational activities, and a summer camp in the United States. At the Youth House in Sokhumi, over 2,000 local and vulnerable youth, between the ages of 10-16, have taken part in educational and counseling services and extra-curricular activities.

The re-opening ceremony will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Youth House Office, at 106 Badinskaya ulitsa, 2nd floor.
