U.S. Government Supports Handbook and Legislative Database for Parliament
June 28, 2000

Tbilisi—The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Gigi Tsereteli and the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kenneth Yalowitz will speak on June 29 at a ceremony marking U.S. computer and information assistance to the Parliament of Georgia. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the development assistance agency of the U.S. government, has provided support for a handbook and legislative database for the Parliament of Georgia. Also speaking at the event will be USAID Mission Director Michael Farbman and General Secretary of the Parliament Khatuna Gogorishvili.

The Parliament handbook was developed by The National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the Parliamentary Research Department. Modeled on the U.S. Congressional Oversight Manual, the handbook includes information on the structure and functions of the Parliament, as well as an outline of the oversight role the Parliament has over all government agencies as mandated by the Georgian constitution.

The legislative database project posts Georgian laws enacted since 1990 on the Parliament website (www.parliament.ge) in the Georgian and English languages. The assistance project, which builds on early USAID assistance that developed the Parliament Internet and Intranet, includes firewalls and other safety precautions. The overall USAID information assistance project to Parliament has included a server, LAN, routers and computers, equipment and training.

The ceremony will begin on Thursday, July 29 at 2:30 p.m. in the Rustaveli Hall within the Parliament. Please call 92-25-47 for more information.
