Members of the House Democracy Assistance Commission Visit Georgia

December 17, 2008

On December 17, 2008, a Congressional Delegation led by Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) will visit Georgia to conduct meetings with President Saakashvili, Prime Minister Mgaloblishvili, Speaker of the Parliament Bakradze, and Parliamentary Committees to discuss post-conflict recovery and democratization processes.

Delegation members include David Dreier (R-CA), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Bill Shuster (R-PA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and congressional staffers from the House Democracy Assistance Commission (HDAC). The Commission is comprised of 20 Members of the House of Representatives who directly participate in supporting the development of democratic governments around the world.

On December 18, Head of the Congressional Delegation Allyson Schwartz will donate computer hardware and software to Speaker Bakradze to create a unified computer network within the Parliament of Georgia. The equipment will improve both internal and external communications as well as data storage and accessibility for Parliament Members, staff, and citizens. The assistance will also enable the Parliament to improve the functionality and content of Parliament’s website.

On December 19, Members will witness the announcement of the next phase of U.S. assistance to Georgia in a ceremony at the State Chancellery.
