U.S. Destroyer Makes Port Call in Batumi and Poti
November 21, 2008
On November 22, the USS Barry (DDG 52) will make a port call in Georgia’s port of Batumi. USS Barry is in the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers. It is the fourth ship in the United States Navy named after Commodore John Barry (1745-1803), one of the most important leaders of the early United States Navy. Her construction began on March 13, 1989; she was commissioned in 1992. USS Barry's first operational deployment was to Haiti for Operation Support Democracy in 1994.
At 12:00 Georgian officials and local residents will welcome the crew at Batumi pier. There are also several events planned with the town of Batumi including a social and a community relations project where members of the crew will participate in a beautification project of the city. On November 24, the crew will host a thanksgiving dinner to welcome distinguished visitors and media on board. USS Barry will leave Batumi and arrive at Poti on November 26.
Members of the media are welcome to attend the ceremony at the pier.
