Ambassador Tefft Dedicates New Port of Entry in Lagodekhi

November 19, 2008

On November 19, 2008, Ambassador Tefft and Minister of Finance Gilauri will dedicate the new Port of Entry at Lagodekhi. Chief of the Georgian Border Police Zaza Gogava, Head of the Georgian Revenue Service Grigol Gobejishvili and other officials will also attend the ceremony.  The project worth of $962,000 is the latest in a long list of goods, services, and tasks that the Georgia Border Security and Law Enforcement program has donated to the Georgian Government. The port of entry and the structures on it were built by “Alioni”, a Georgian contractor under the supervision and oversight of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The project started in 2006 and was completed in 2008.

This is the third of four port of entry facilities that are being built for the Georgian government with the U.S. Government’s assistance.   Facilities have already been completed and are operational at Red Bridge and Sadakhlo, and a fourth facility will soon be completed at Kazbegi. Over the past ten years Georgia Border Security and Law Enforcement has donated over $150,000,000.00 worth of goods and services to Georgian Law Enforcement organizations.

Ports of entry like this are important to the security of Georgia.  They permit Georgia to control its borders, and to identify and inspect persons, conveyances, and merchandise entering and exiting Georgia’s sovereign territory.
