American Expert on DNA Provides Technical Assistance to Georgian Colleagues

November 14, 2008

The International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INL) at the U.S. Department of State is sponsoring a technical assistance program for the DNA analysis section of the National Forensic Bureau (NFB) in Tbilisi.  From November 10-14, an American DNA expert will conduct an assessment of the DNA section of the NFB for the purposes of creating a comprehensive plan for U.S.-funded training, equipment and other technical assistance.

Following the August conflict with Russia, the DNA section was under great pressure to provide DNA analysis to identify remains of soldiers and citizens killed during the conflict.  The U.S. Embassy is pleased to be able to support the important and highly skilled work of these Georgian experts. The National Forensics Bureau is the only laboratory in the Caucuses region that provides DNA analysis.
