Project Harmony's Legal Socialization Project in Georgia
January 30, 2009
On Friday January 30, U.S. Ambassador John Tefft will attend the launch of the Project Harmony Legal Socialization Project in Georgia at School #165. The goal of this Project is to build relationships between the police, young people, parents and teachers so that issues affecting the local community can be tackled together. The classroom partnership between teachers and police officers is an innovative way to reach out to young people and discuss their roles and responsibilities in a democratic society. By working in the classroom with public school teachers and students, the police can help teach about legal issues in a curriculum developed together with Georgian educators entitled “Lawful Culture.” This three month course is made up of eight units and covers such topics as legal rights and responsibilities, and guarding against harmful habits.
Sixteen police officers and twenty teachers trained together this fall so that the curriculum could be introduced this month. In this initial pilot phase, the project will be launched in 18 schools - five schools in Tbilisi, five in Batumi, three in Rustavi, and five in Kutaisi. The courses will end in the middle of March.
This project is implemented by U.S.-based organization Project Harmony, with the support of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Bureau of the U.S. Department of State.
