U.S. Government Delivers Anti-Smuggling Training to Georgian Ministries
June 9-10, 2011
On June 9 and 10 at the Courtyard Marriott in Tbilisi, instructors from the United States Argonne National Laboratory delivered training to personnel from the Georgian Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and the Revenue Service. This training, in Analysis of Strategic Commodity Transfers and valued at over $50,000, is part of a larger effort by the United States government to assist the government of Georgia in preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
The United States Export Control and Related Border Security (EXBS) program and the Department of Energy, sponsored this training to help Georgian personnel better understand the threat of weapons of mass destruction and to learn ways to identify dangerous chemicals, dual use electronics, and other suspicious materials. These skills will be applied throughout Georgia to prevent illicit materials from transiting borders while protecting trade and economic growth. EXBS has provided extensive training and technical assistance to multiple Georgian ministries to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction and related items since 2006.
