U.S. Government assists Georgian flood victims in Kakheti (October 2)

The United States Government is mobilizing an emergency humanitarian effort to assist the victims of the floods. This effort, actively supported by the U.S. Embassy Tbilisi, is being coordinated by Counterpart International's Community and Humanitarian Assistance Program (CHAP) office in Georgia.

CHAP is partnering with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to donate hygiene kits, International Relief & Development (IRD) to provide orphanage modules (a wood pallet piled with boxes of clothing, toys, baby items and blankets), and A Call to Serve (ACTS) Georgia for dry soups, medical kits and supplies and medicines from the local hospitals. In addition, CHAP is distributing disaster packages that include sleeping bags, bed sheets, blankets and towels.

On October 1, U.S. Embassy Assistance Coordinator Cassandra Welch, and Political Economic Assistant Thomas Cumbow visited Kvareli District in the Kakheti Region of Georgia. They met with local officials and the victims of the recent floods in the region.Recent heavy rains caused major flooding in the Kakheti Region of Georgia and the Kvareli district was particularly damaged by the disaster.  According to the Kvareli local government, five hundred families were directly affected by the flood.  Out of three thousand families residing in Kvareli, fifteen hundred families are left without drinking water.  Dozens of houses, vineyards, and agricultural lands have been flooded. Further, the flooding from the Duruji River has destroyed the bridge connecting the villages of Sabue and Shilda.
