December 13, 2003
On December 13th, Ambassador Miles and Interim President Nino Burjanadze addressed the newest graduates of the U.S.-sponsored Georgia Train and Equip Program. The soldiers of the U.S. training program were sworn in in Republic Square, where they were joined by three battalions of previously-trained graduates of the GTEP program. Georgian General Tevzadze, and U.S. Marine Major Western also addressed the newly sworn-in soldiers.
GTEP is designed to train four battalions and a mechanized company. The December graduation marked the completion of the last battalion to be trained by American soldiers. Each battalion is composed of over 500 soldiers, bringing the total number of American-trained soldiers to over 2,000. Training of a mechanized company is scheduled to begin in January.
