Ambassador Tefft Opens English Language Center at the Police Academy of Georgia
On March 6, 2008, Ambassador Tefft and Ambassador Terhi Hakala, Head of the OSCE Mission to Georgia, officially opened the English Language Center at the Police Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. Ambassador Tefft and Ambassador Hakala participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and delivered opening remarks together with Ms. Khatia Dekanoidze, the Rector of the Police Academy, and Ms. Eka Zghuladze, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The English Language Center at the Police Academy represents an exemplary partnership between the Academy, the English Teachers Association of Georgia (ETAG), the OSCE Mission, and the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement and Public Affairs Sections of the U.S. Embassy. English-language teachers will develop a curriculum and teach English to police officers so that they can better assist tourists and other foreigners in Georgia while also raising their own skill levels. The Public Affairs Section is also inviting U.S. Department of State funded English Language Specialist, Ms. Diane Millar, to assist the Police Academy English language instructors in curriculum design and in the development of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses.
