Discussing American Political Campaigns in Kutaisi
U.S. Embassy Political Officer Alan Purcell spoke about political campaigns in the United States in a December 20 discussion with a group of American Studies students at Kutaisi State University. Purcell, who was in Kutaisi for meetings with local officials and the various campaigns competing in Georgia’s January 5 presidential elections, noted to the students that voters in Iowa and New Hampshire would be making the first choices in the 2008 U.S. presidential election at about the same time Georgian voters are choosing their president. Purcell illustrated his explanation of the primaries, conventions, and other parts of the U.S. election process by showing the group his collection of American political campaign buttons dating back to the 1930s. Purcell and the students discussed the similarities and differences between the American and Georgian political systems, U.S. views of the Georgian election, and the future of relations between the two countries.
