US Embassy Recognizes Its Nominee for the International Women of Courage Aword

On March 13, Ambassador John F. Tefft recognized Marina Tabukashvili, Chairman of the Georgian NGO TASO, as U.S. Embassy Tbilisi’s nominee for Secretary Rice’s Women of Courage Award.  Tabukashvili has been a powerful advocate for women’s issues within the Caucasus region for more than 15 years, playing a large role in creating Anti-Domestic Violence Coalition networks in Georgia which give meaningful assistance to victims.  She has addressed such culturally cross-cutting issues as trafficking, domestic violence and the gaps between ethnic and religious minorities.  Tabukashvili was instrumental in organizing the Embassy’s December 10 roundtable on Domestic Violence, “Stop the Violence:  Talking is the First Step” which brought together representatives from government ministries and NGOs to discuss the issue.
