Sergei Prokudin-Gorski Photography Exhibition Opens in Zugdidi
On April 29, 2007 Ambassador John Tefft, George Gabashvili, the Minister of Culture, Monuments Protection and Sports of Georgia, and Zaza Gorozia, the Governor of Samergrelo Zemo-Svaneti Region, opened the exhibit “Colorful Past: 100 photos of Sergei Prokudin-Gorski” at the Dadiani Museum Complex in Zugdidi. The Dadiani Museum is the second location where these unique photos have been displayed. TBC bank in Tbilisi hosted the exhibit earlier this year. The Dadiani exhibit is open to the public from 11am-5pm until May 28.
The exhibition offers a view of Prokudin-Gorski’s work in Georgia and the former Soviet Union, including photos of local dress, natural scenery, agriculture and industry. The Exhibit is a joint effort of the U.S. Embassy, Georgia Glass and Mineral Water Company, the Dadiani Museum in Zugdidi, and the International Union of the Heirs of the Dadiani Family. The original color plates from which the Prokudin-Gorski photographs are created are part of the permanent collection of the U.S. Library of Congress. The Library of Congress developed a unique digital process to recreate Prokudin-Gorski's color photos and make them available to international audiences.
The Zugdidi exhibition opening was widely covered by both national and local media, and it has become a popular attraction in the local community. Every day, people from across western Georgia, including school groups, are visiting the exhibition in Niko Palace of the Dadiani Museum-Complex.
