Ambassador Tefft Talking Jazz to Georgian Youth
In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month Embassy Tbilisi organized two public lectures in partnership with the Georgian National Museum, Radio Syndicate, and the Eastern Promotion Company. On April 28, 2007, Ambassador Tefft joined three distinguished Georgian speakers to discuss favorite American jazz musicians and styles. During event, video clips from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock’s concerts were shown university students gathered in the public auditorium of the Georgian National Museum. The goal of the project is to popularize jazz among Georgian youth and encourage musicians, schools, museums, and broadcasters to offer programs on jazz. The public lectures stimulate the Tbilisi’s current jazz scene and encourage young people to study jazz, attend jazz concerts and listen to jazz. Georgia’s daily 24 Hours (04/30) wrote: “Speakers were delighted to see that the majority of the audience were youngsters. ‘The art of jazz has brought happiness to mankind. This is the music of democracy and freedom. This is why we want more young people to listen to jazz and to fall in love with jazz’ – said Gaioz Kandelaki, one of the invited speakers.
