Embassy Officials Visit UNOMIG's Area Of Responsibility Together With Representatives Of The "Friends of the Secretary General"

U.S. Embassy Political-Economic Chief Bridget Brink and Political Officer Stacey Blau visited the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) area of responsibility April 2-4. They traveled at the invitation of the Secretary General’s Special Representative to Georgia as part of a periodic meetings in Abkhazia that bring together officials from the countries belonging to the "Friends of the Secretary General" (United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia). The Friends accompanied UNOMIG observers on patrol in the predominently ethnic Georgian Gali region and talked to UN police and human rights officials. They also spoke to local officials, law enforcement authorities, representatives from Gali-based non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and ordinary citizens on both sides of the cease-fire line. The visit made clear the need for continued security in the region to promote the return of internally displaced persons throughout Abkhazia and to achieve a peaceful resolution of the current conflict ensuring a successful and prosperous future for Abkhazia in Georgia.
