Political Officer Deb Miller Discusses Thurgood Marshall in Khashuri
To mark Black History Month, on February 6, Political Officer Deborah Miller spoke on the life and achievements of Thurgood Marshall at the American Corner in Khashuri. In her presentation to local students, Ms. Miller spoke about Marshall's pioneering civil rights work with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund which culminated in the 1954 U.S. Supreme Court decision Brown vs. Board of Education which outlawed segregation in America's public schools. Ms. Miller used excerpts from Marshall's oral argument before the Supreme Court in the Brown case as well as from the opinions Marshall authored after he was appointed as the first Black American to sit on the Supreme Court to illustrate Marshall's belief that the law guarantees that all Americans must be provided equal opportunities. The presentation prompted a lively discussion on the ongoing judicial reform process in Georgia.
