U.S. Embassy and National Museum Bring Christmas Traditions to Batumi

On January 15th staff from the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section and the Georgian National Museum held a special lecture on art and Christmas traditions in Europe and the United States at the American Corner in Batumi. The National Museum’s Ms. Nina Gedevanishvili, Manager of the Educational Department, introduced Batumi middle school students to how western Christmas traditions are depicted in art. With the help of Embassy Cultural Affairs Assistant Natia Trapaidze, Gedevanishvili explained the history and meaning of western holiday customs such as the Christmas tree, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas cards, and the popular image of Santa Claus (developed from a drawing of Santa at Harper’s Weekly by Thomas Nast). Over 40 students attended the presentation which ended with a wide-ranging question and answer session on Christmas symbols, practices and related subjects.
