Three Day Film Festival Highlights Role of Judicial System in Protecting Human Rights
In celebration of international human rights week the U.S. Embassy sponsored a three day film festival at Tbilisi State University, December 8 – 10, 2006. One episode of the popular American television program “Law and Order” was shown each day to highlight the role of the judicial system in protecting human rights. After each screening a panel of Georgian and American experts discussed the legal and ethical issues raised in the program.
On Friday’s panel, Giorgi Jokhadze, co-author of Georgia’s new Criminal Procedure Code, and Amanda Ashford, ABA/CEELI Liaison, discussed courtroom procedures and how these rules protect the rights of the accused.
On Saturday, Nino Zhizhilashvili, Producer, Mze TV; Nana Lezhava, freelance journalist; and Nana Kiknadze, Press Assistant, U.S. Embassy, discussed the ethical dilemmas faced by journalists reporting from conflict zones.
On Sunday, Madlen Khelashvili, Head of Curriculum Development, Tbilisi Police Academy; Ana Chigitashvili, Head of Criminal Faculty, Tbilisi Police Academy; Michael Nicholson, Senior U.S. Police Advisor, U.S. Embassy; and Johannes Van den Hoogen, Assistant Legal Attaché, U.S. Embassy, discussed techniques police use to investigate crimes including obtaining warrants, conducting searches, and interrogating suspects.
About 75 students from four different universities attended the sessions.
