Embassy Community Wishes Marines Happy Birthday at Marine Ball
Saturday, November 4, the embassy community joined members of the U.S. Marine Security Guard Detachment in celebrating 231 years of U.S Marine service. To mark the day, the Marines organized the annual Marine Ball at the Sheraton Metechi Palace complete with the traditional cake cutting ceremony and ceremonial readings of letters from current Marine Corps Commandant, General Hagee, and former Commandant, General John A. Lejeune, the13th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps who formalized the birthday tradition.
Over 200 people attended the Ball for an evening of dining and dancing. The Marine Ball has become a favorite social engagement for the Embassy Tbilisi community and U.S. Embassies throughout the world. More importantly, the Marine Corps Ball remains an important event for recognizing the commitment and sacrifice of the Marines who protect American Embassies. The central event of the evening remains a ceremony in memory of all Marines who have lost their lives in service, are missing in action, or are prisoners of war. At every Marine Ball an empty table is set to remember their sacrifice. |
