USAID’s Brock Bierman Discusses Volunteerism in Gori, Khashuri and Batumi
On Monday, June 19, Brock Bierman, the Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Assistant Administrator for Europe and Eurasia of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), visited the American Corners in Gori and Khashuri to speak about volunteerism and public service.
Twenty-nine persons attended the talks, including university students, historians, librarians, and teachers. On Wednesday, June 21, Mr. Bierman gave his “Value of Volunteerism” lecture at Batumi State University to 40 English speaking students and faculty members. During his lectures, Mr. Bierman emphasized the importance of being involved in one’s community and gave examples ranging from cleaning up trash to getting involved in local politics.
He spoke about the electoral system and fielded questions about how local political involvement varies in a bi-party and a multi-party system. Mr. Bierman also led discussions with the audience about how volunteerism differs in the United States and post-Soviet countries such as Georgia, and how to become civically engaged when there is insufficient funding. |
