U.S. Government Assistance Helps Children in Gali District
On June 16, 2006, United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the Government of Abkhazia in Exile provided humanitarian assistance to children living in Gali District in Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia. As part of an ongoing effort, UMCOR handed over pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to the head physicians of eleven outpatient clinics of Gali District and Gali Central Hospital.
UMCOR also distributed non-medical commodities such as school kits, hygiene kits and sewing kits to 386 children living in Gali District. The school-aged children and their teachers crossed the border of the breakaway region of Abkhazia to attend a performance and concert in the western Georgian town of Zugdidi. The event was organized by the Abkhazian Government in Exile and the Association “Hera XXI”. Donated supplies were distributed after the after the performance.
Since 2005, the U.S. Department of State has funded UMCOR to conduct the Medical Distribution Program which distributes medicine and medical supplies to eleven clinics in the Gali district of Abkhazia. UMCOR carries out this program in partnership with outpatient and inpatient clinics and the Government of Abkhazia in Exile. |
