Ambassador Tefft and MIA Officials Detonate Car for U.S.- Sponsored Forensics Training
On Thursday, May 18, Ambassador Tefft joined officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Georgian law enforcement agencies in detonating a car and several other objects. The detonations are the practical part of a two-week course for Georgian law enforcement officers on investigative and forensics procedures. The course teaches participants how an explosive device can be reconstructed in order to pursue a more successful investigation and prosecution.
This training is part of a multi-year, multi-million dollar training and assistance effort by the U.S. Department of State to improve the capacity and professionalism of Georgian law enforcement. The training is being conducted by visiting experts from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on behalf of the United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL). 26 Georgian investigators and scientific forensic experts are participating in the post-blast investigative techniques.
Ambassador Tefft and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Eka Zguladze, were among the ranking guests given the privilege of detonating the test bombs. After the detonations, the ATF instructors and the participating Georgian officers collected evidence and reconstructed the explosive devices.
