Action to Assist IDPs Affected with Heavy Snow in Kutaisi and Tskaltubo
In response to a call by the Georgian Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation for immediate assistance to internally displaced persons (IDP’s) affected with heavy snow in Kutaisi and Tskaltubo, the U.S. Department of State requested that the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to Georgia mobilize resources from all the Department of State funded grantees in Georgia in order to assist the IDP’s in need. UMCOR coordinated joint action of the five private voluntary organizations in Georgia (A Call to Serve, International Relief and Development, World Council of Hellenes , Counterpart International, and UMCOR) funded by the U.S. Department of State to provide support to the vulnerable.
The event of joint distribution of blankets and hygiene/non-medical commodities to the most vulnerable IDP families in Kutaisi and Tskaltubo started at 10 a.m. February 16, 2006. Concurrently, the World Council of Hellenes mobile unit, consisting of a physician, pediatrician, dermatologist, cardiologist, ultrasound specialist, and lab assistant arrived to the Kutaisi IDP Policlinic and started medical checks. Within the two days (February 16 -17) 627 medical checks were recorded.
One of the key outcomes of the Joint Action to Assist IDP’s in Need was the rapid and efficient collective efforts of the five Department of State grantees in Georgia that create a significant, positive impact on the lives of needy individuals in Georgia.
