UMCOR Joins Georgia’s First Lady in Celebrating World Diabetes Day
On October 4, 2006, the Tbilisi Youth Palace hosted a conference and donation ceremony dedicated to internally displaced children (IDPs) under the slogan “Diabetes Care for Everyone”. The ceremony was warmly welcomed by Georgia’s First Lady, Ms. Sandra Roelofs. First Lady Roelofs personally handed out United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) donated health, school and sewing kits to IDP children suffering from diabetes. The ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of the Government of Abkhazia in exile and the Center of Diabetes. UMCOR, through U.S Department of State funding, supported the event and provides financial and material support to almost all IDP centers in Tbilisi and Imereti.
This was the third UMCOR donation ceremony for IDP children. The event attracted over 200 participants including IDP children, their parents and family members, government officials, health practitioners, and international NGOs. Georgian officials at the event included Gigi Tsereteli, Chairman of Parliament’s Healthcare and Social Issues Committee, Levan Jugeli, Deputy Minister of Labor, Health and Social Protection, and Dalila Khorava, Minister of Health for the Government of Abkhazia in exile.
The International Diabetes Federation chose 2006 as the year of the disadvantaged and the vulnerable. A series of activities will take place over the course of the year to emphasize this theme. Georgia joined the World Diabetes Day 2006 campaign to raise awareness about the importance of providing disadvantaged communities and vulnerable groups with appropriate diabetes care, prevention and education.
