Democracy Commission Grant Recipient Activates Minorities for the Upcoming Election in Georgia

On August 1, the NGO New Generation New Initiative (nGnI) awarded graduation certificates to 20 civil society leaders from the Samtske-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli regions. nGnI used a U.S. Embassy Democracy Commission Grant to conduct a training in the framework of the project “Active Ethnic Minorities for Civil Society.” nGnI identified and trained leaders of ethnic minority organizations to increase civic activity in the upcoming local government elections, tentatively scheduled for November 2006. Participants received instruction on the role of civil society in the election process, election law, and election monitoring techniques. Chairman of nGnI, Mr. Konstantine Ionatamishvili, discussed his organization's activities with Ms. Dali Homeriki, Embassy Cultural Affairs Assistant. Ms. Homeriki attended the graduation on behalf of the U.S. Embassy. Having trained the civil society leaders, nGnI is preparing for a full-fledged voter educational program to take place before the local government elections in 10 regional towns of the Kvemo Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions. These programs will target non-Georgian ethnic populations, including Armenian, Azerbaijani, Greek, and Russian ethnic groups.
