December 18, Interim President Nino Burjanadze attends DVC conference at American Embassy; talks to State Department Officials in Washington
On December 18th, Interim President Nino Burjanadze and State Minister Zurab Zhvania attended a digital video conference (DVC) with United States government officials in Washington, DC. The DVC, held in the American Embassy, allowed President Burjanadze, State Minister Zurab Zhvania, Finance Minister Zurab Noghaideli, Foreign Ministry representative Mamuka Khudava, Ambassador Miles, Deputy Chief of Mission Patricia Moller, and other United States government representatives to look at and speak directly to Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lynn Pascoe about U.S. assistance to Georgia.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lynn Pascoe was joined in Washington by a number of officials, including representatives from the National Security Council, Treasury, Department of Defense, and the Georgian Ambassador to the United States, Levan Mikeladze. During the DVC, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lynn Pascoe informed the Georgian Government that the United States would commit $21 million to assist Georgia through its current period of transition. During Mr. Pascoe's December 3-6 visit to Tbilisi, he announced $7 million of assistance to Georgia. The amount Mr. Pascoe announced on December 18th represents an additional $14 million. This assistance will largely be used to pay salaries and pensions.
The Georgian leadership informed U.S. representatives of the significant process it is making in the fight against corruption and moving Georgia on the path of steady economic development.
The United States looks forward to working closely with the Interim Government and the future government to promote an ambitious reform agenda that will bring transparency, accountability and prosperity to Georgia's economy.
