Civic engagement and Democracy in the eyes of Georgian Youth

On November 20, 2008 the Tbilisi Youth Palace American Corner hosted a lecture “Civic Participation in a Democracy” by Michelle Logsdon, Director of Democracy and Governance Office, USAID.

The speaker talked about democracy models in which ordinary citizens, public officials, and politicians engage in an open, inclusive process of dialogue in order to address matters of public concern, providing reference from current US elections, and examples of public participation in civic and political processes in the US.

American Corner users had an opportunity to discuss how the public opinion can bring a change and what forms of public activity are presented in the process of building democracy in Georgia. The discussion was very interesting, showing how the youth understand the democracy models and the diverse opportunities of civic participation.
