Georgia Enhances Capability to Protect its Borders with US Government Support

On November 19, 2008, Ambassador Tefft and Minister of Finance Nick Gilauri dedicated the new Port of Entry near Lagodekhi at the border with Azerbaijan. “The United States is proud of the assistance that we have provided to Georgia under the Georgia Border Security and Law Enforcement program.  Ports of entry like this are important to the security of Georgia.  They permit Georgia to control its borders, and to identify and inspect persons, conveyances, and merchandise entering and exiting Georgia’s sovereign territory,” stated US Ambassador John Tefft at the ceremony.

This modern facility worth of $962,000 represents third of four port of entry facilities that are being built for the Georgian government with the U.S. government’s assistance.   Facilities have already been completed and are operational at Red Bridge and Sadakhlo, and a fourth facility will soon be completed at Kazbegi. “Over the past ten years Georgia Border Security and Law Enforcement has donated over $150,000,000.00 worth of goods and services to Georgian Law Enforcement organizations,” pointed out Ambassador Tefft.
