July 24, AMBASSADOR'S WIFE VISITS ECO CAMP IN KAKHETI REGION OF GEORGIA

On July 24, Mrs. Sharon Miles visited an ecological camp in Tcheremi, a village in the woods of Kakheti. The idea of initiating Tcheremi Ecological Youth Camp belongs to one of the Peace Corps Volunteers, who put together the project proposal and implemented it with the help of her host mother and one of the Georgian entrepreneurs. Twenty children, ages 10-12, from all schools of Gurjaani (city in Kakheti region) were chosen through an application process and spent one week in the eco camp doing leadership activities, environmental education, English lessons, sports, art and hikes. Mrs. Miles toured the camp, met with the children and discussed with them various issues related to environmental protection, youth involvement in ecological activities, and the importance of creating and maintaining eco camps. Later, Peace Corps Volunteers accompanied Mrs. Miles on a visit to a well-preserved pagan monument on one of the tops of the hill in Cheremi village.
